Sounds like a Cheryl Phillips /WedgeWorks pattern - the 3D Mariners Compass using her folded fabric technique.

Do keep in mind that the book does include the set of templates.
I just put one link in above for the 1999 book.
However, her earlier book (1997) - which also includes a template -
