marking for hand quilting
#12
When I echo quilt, I use the open toe foot, this gives you a clear view of the distance between the applique and the needle, then I use the top of the open corner left or right of the needle to just see the edge of the applique and this guides me around the applique.
If you lessen your foot pressure it helps you move the quilt around easily with stopping every couple of stitches to reposition.

The way I understand echo quilting to be is 1/4" away from either a seam or off the edge of an applique. If you make a quilt with all the same size squares, echoing would be 1/4" to one side or the other of the seam. It would make your squares pop out...kinda 3D.
