For white, I use the Purple Vanishing Markers. Make sure there is no heat that hits the marker, i.e. sunlight, iron, etc. As I finish quilting each section, I spritz with water to make it go away. On other colors, I use Chaco Liners. I love them! I just avoid anything blue--chalk or otherwise.

I have a drawer full of different kinds of markers.
The one I prefer is the dissappearing ink marker. It works the best but is time sinsitive. You cannot leave it overnight or it will go away.
I also like the Wonder Marker water remover pen when I need to leave the marks on for awhile.
I have pounce in white and blue but so many fabrics dont show the chalk marks.
Most pencil markers just wont mark for me except for actual pencils, they work and so far they have washed out.
I have tried the chalk square markers and they work well but you cant do many designs with it.

I haven't found one technique that works on everything. I favor the marking pen in neon blue that washes out. For black and very dark colors I use white chalk, but that leaves a residue that doesn't always come off. Recently saw a marking pen that comes off when ironed. The pencil marks have always come off for me when I've used them but drawing a straight line on flexible fabric is hard for me.
Have fun playing around and good luck finding a technique you like.
