Drafting tape looks like masking tape but it doesn't leave residue. Stationery stores might have this if you are not close enough to a store that sells painters' tape.

I always use masking tape, never had a problem with it. I certainly prefer it over painter's tape.

I use painters tape to hold a small plastic bag ( that my newspaper comes in) to the edge of my sewing machine cabinet. I can just push fabric and thread scraps right in, and as it fills, I empty it into my larger bag. I also have on taped to the edge of my cutting table to have it super handy. A woman in my guild makes doggie beds for the animal shelter, then fills them with scraps. So we save our scraps for her.

If I didn't have painter's tape handy I would use masking tape. I actually have clamps from home depot to clamp quilts to dining table to sandwich. Use whatever you have, not only one thing works.

I've tried the blue painter's tape, but found it didn't stick well to the plastic table I use to sandwich on. Nor did a masking tape that trumpeted that it was made of recycled materials. So it's plain old ordinary masking tape for me from now on.

I’ve watched ladies in my old church group pull masking tape off and save it to reuse ! I doubt it was successful.

That irritates me to no end. Waste all that time trying to save something that isn't worth saving. When I went to the church donation sew group I would always take a new roll of masking tape. I wouldn't use that old saved tape that would pop off and had to be redone. One lady told me it works fine if you use a pin and pin it down. Good Grief. When I read a post about people being cheap I think of that group. LOL

Masking tape seemed to be the first tape used when I looked at quilting books, etc but painter's tape is great.

I've even used duct tape once when I ran out of both painters tape and masking tape. I was really careful with the duct tape though. Made sure it barely was on the fabric and absolutely on a part that would be cut off.

My motto is USE what you have on hand.
