Thanks everyone. The recipient is an old friend from college. We haven't seen another since my wedding three years ago,but he was of the night rescuing variety at one point. I really like option D. I will have to see if have enough fabric left. Otherwise, I will make it square.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]489119[/ATTACH]IMHO, I would leave as is and have one larger Panel on side and put the childs name on it. ( if you know the name). Kids LOVE their names on their quilts. This quilt for my grandson was like yours, but adding his name on the side gave me the width and he loves it.

There are so many ways you can make it wider. You can remove rows and add larger lattice, or just add an extra border only on the sides. There are no rules do what ever you want. I actually do prefer a rectangle over a square. That's quite large for a baby quilt, hopefully it is not too babyish and they can use it for many years. Good luck!

I would pull a few rows off and add them to the back or make a pillow or a diaper bag or something. A square would be my second choice.

I guess I would either go square 36x36 with a border or just go square 45x45. I have a baby quilt on my wall at the moment that got out of control and is now 45 " square and I would not change the size at all. It work with the patterns and little babies, don't stay little. They turn in to toddlers that can use a larger quilt for snuggling in. Hope to see a picture soon. BTW, I was an English major and I stumble with math too but quilting has helped!

When I come up with a problem like that I try to make use of any scraps I might have adding a small border of coins (what I call them) to the sides to add width. Here's a pic of one I did this too. On another I just added scraps to add length/width to the quilt.
