That should work also as long as the edges of the slippery surface don't curl up.
By the way, I literally wrapped the paper down the front of my cabinet, across the sewing machine bed and then down the back of my cabinet.
Obviously you have to cut a small hole through the paper for the needle to go through before you begin stitching. I cut about a dime sized hole.
EDIT: I used painters tape so as not to leave a residue on my machine and cabinet. I'm note sure if there is a double sided tape that is residue free.

I am liking this idea a whole lot. I volunteer at my daughter's school's library, and I spend hours covering paperback book covers with contact paper. Always just recycled the backing paper...wistfully. Now I have a use for it! You are genius.

If it works that well maybe it would be worth reinforcing it for longer wear: peel the Contac vinyl part off and put it on the reverse side. Could have a custom-sized slider for just the cost of a roll of Contac paper! I'm going to add a roll to my WalMart shopping list....

Great hint. I must try it. As for double sided tape, it's usually pretty strong on the bottom side of the tape & maybe a little problematic trying to remove it without leaving a lot of sticky residue on the bed of your machine. I would experiment first.
