Just a comment on using Home Dec fabric.. yes it is a bit "heavier" for the most part but .. Home Dec fabrics are not manufactured to be washed frequently. They are resistant to sun fad more than quilters cotton, but the dyes and inks used in printing are not the same as what is used in quilters cottons.
Don't rule out quilters cottons. Purchase good quality is the key. I have one that over 30 years old and washed every two weeks .
The poly double knits and heavier woven poly will retain color and be very very durable, again providing the construction is durable. Do be cautious in some poly and poly blends for pilling. With these you don't know till its washed.

Yes, although you have to go to a regular fabric store (as opposed to a LQS) to find it. I've seen it at Fabric Depot, and I'm pretty sure Joann's carries it also.

We still don't know the why. Knowing that will make answering the question easier.

You could use a cotton / poly blend. This will last a long time. It is not a soft as 100% cotton but not too bad.

Look for apparel fabric at Joann's or Hancock's. If you want it to be really sturdy, look at "bottomweight" fabric - denim, gaberdine, corderoy. If you want colorful, look in Children's Apparel. If you don't have a major fabric store nearby, look in thrift stores for jeans or men's flannel shirts to deconstruct and re-use in a quilt.

Examples of a good medium weight quilting fabric would be -
Andover, Benartex, Hoffman California, Northcott, Red Rooster, RJR, Robert Kaufman, Windham Fabrics. There are many other brands but those are the ones I usually try to find, for medium weight. Hobby Lobby carries its own brand (no doubt produced by one of the major brands), as do several other fabric companies, like Connecting Threads.
If I'm working with very small pieces, I use a slightly lighter weight fabric, so the seams are less bulky. Unless your quilt will be dragged around a lot, any quality fabric should be just fine.

First time I ever heard of those fabrics being "medium weight".

Still no word from the one asking the initial question. Are you there?

At least no one suggested Cordura.

72 posts, maybe she doesn't know how to return to this thread. Or maybe she forgot about us. Is it possible we're forgettable?
