I HATE mending jeans, especially as they always seem to rip right next to the seam! Found the solution. the webbing I use for handbag straps cut and put behind the rip, push the rip together, then zigzag over the rip and into the webbing. Worked like a charm this morning!

I have to do this too. I usually use a scrap of denim from another project. All those stupid jeans the kids buy that looks like they are already worn out, they usually wind up bringing them to me and asking them to be patched anyway.

I use the iron on mending tape applied to the wrong side & then do a number of rows of zig-zag stitches on the front side. It helps to keep all the color of the loose fabric threads included in the repair.

I also use a scrap of denim to reinforce when I mend...and I do NOT replace zippers!

I also use a piece of denim behind it, but my daughter gets mad when I cut up the ones she wanted mended to fix my DSIL. And they always rip at the corners of the back pockets.

When my kids were little I used something to stabilize the rip on the wrong side of the jean fabric then did FME - Free Motion Embroidery - over the rip. My son had lots of footballs, soccer balls and such. My daughter had flowers and other girly designs I made up.

Now, by the time my stuff needs repair it is too worn for even Goodwill. Though they do put them in their rag bin.

52 years ago my husband who was my then boyfriend asked me to replace a zipper in his work pants. Velcro had just been invented so I took the easy way out and used it to repair. The problem with this was that velcro was such a new concept that all the others wanted to see him rip open and then close his fly which became a real nuisance.
