    I've made denim and flannel and it has held up for years and years...lol It's indestructible!

    Why not ask for some of his shirts, it will be totally HIS quilt. Still do as you planned with whatever design you have chosen.
    I really like the circle quilt but other designs work well.

    I made 3 denim rag quilts mixed with 100% pre-washed bandana fabric. They turned out beautiful. No camera, so can't post a picture.

    I would pick up a couple of gently used flannel shirts from a thrift shop and cut them into squares to use with the denim.

    My friend is making a rag quilt using denim and flannel but she was able to prewash the flannel as that tends to shrink quite a bit.
