Last year I impulsively ordered one of the Moda "American Primer" layer cakes to make a really quick lap quilt for FMQ practice. I didn't realize that some of Moda's designer lines are 10% linen blends.

I'm just now getting around to using it and want to add some other fabric to make the quilt a little bigger. The "American Primer" line seems to have sold out. Has anyone used these and know whether I can I mix in some 100% cotton with the linen blend fabrics.

Did you wash the linens first? Usually linens and blends are only available in the beginning of summer, and usually sold as clothing fabric - you may want to try Joanns or Hancocks instead of limiting yourself to quilt shops. Ten percent probably won;t make a big difference, except a little more texture than all cotton.

    What colors do you need?

Because they were precuts, I didn't prewash the squares. Unless I can find someone who has done this, I think that I'm just going to leave the quilt a smaller size rather than gamble on adding 100% cotton blocks.

Are you sure that it has linen in it? I actually came across the Moda archive of this fabric (hopefully this is your line)

and it did not say it had linen in it. I also came up with several online stores that have random fabrics in yardage. Also, here is a Layer cake:

What a pretty line of fabric. Hope you will post a pic when done!!

The package came with a label that said the fabric was 10% linen. I ordered it when the line first came out last year. I noticed that their new line, "Bar Harbor", also has some linen in it. Maybe Moda produces the first batch with linen for these designers. It's just a little odd, because that small bit of linen could shrink more than the cotton. I guess I'll find out after washing the finished quilt!

You should check on artfire for fabric. I know RIG1980 has some american primer for sale. If that is not the acutal pattern you would like, let me know what you would like and I am order it from Moda. They still have good stock on all the lines of American Primer.
    [email protected] or http://www.artfire.com/users/YlwRoseTx533.
It will take me a couple of days to get it from Moda but I would be more than glad to order it for you and then your quilt will be matching!
    Happy Stitching!
    Linda :)
