How to make an American quilt is an AWESOME movie....one of my favorites. A love story in a unique way... is it the love story of people or the story of love that is woven into a quilt??

I was going to say that-LOL I remember sketching one of the quilts with a plan to make one like it, but not I don't remember what it looked like or if I still even have the sketch. I'll have to watch that movie again.

There are two authors that I really like who write novels with quilting themes.

Jennifer Chiaverini has 17 books with the quilting theme. She has another book that is just now being sold.

Marie Bostwick has a series. The story continues with each book with new characters added to each one. She has 4 completed and I think she has another one coming out soon.

fantasticfiction.com is a great resource if you want information about fiction. You can look things up by author and/or book title. Series are listed in the the order written Just check under the author's name. There is a book written about the film How To Make an American Quilt, with quilting information in it. I will look for it in my collection and post the author's name.

I watched this a few weeks back or so and it's worth viewing. I watched it twice and enjoyed it both times.

How to make an American Quilt with Winona Ryder. This is a wonderful movie for quilters. The women discuss difficulties of various kinds in their past and help the younger women through trouble deciding who to marry.

Step Mom with Julia Roberts. This movie is on the sad side, the Mom is dying of cancer and she wants to hate her ex-husband's new younger wife, but in the end she decides to get along with her for the benefit of her children after she passes away. The mom makes memory quilts for her children, and you see her sewing, etc.

These are both very good. And if you want a movie to showcase lawnmowers (possibly entertain the husbands the same night the ladies are watching a quilting movie???) The Straight Story with Richard Farnsworth is the best movie of all time for old farts getting up in age. It's a true story too! It's based in Iowa, a 30 minute drive from where I grew up. You see bicycle riders on the RAGBRAI bike ride across Iowa in a few scenes. It's a touching story about getting to the end of life, and resolving problems within families. It's a movie every grandparent should see sometime in their lifetime, and it's a movie young whipper snappers should see to give them an idea of what life will be like when they get there. It's a thoughtful, well written true story.

Oh and then their's Secondhand Lions with Micheal Caine. Another awesome movie for old farts. Full of adventure and it has a wonderful theme.

This is in answer to CAS49OR's question about novels involving quilting. I went to Amazon.com and did a search for "Quilts, Quilting, Quilters in fiction" and received a substantial listing of authors and books related to or about qulting. Try that or check one of the other bookstore sites to see if they have a similar listing.

Quilts appear in a lot of different movies but sometimes you have to really look. I'm currently making a quilt based on the tiles in the Grand Staircase on the Titanic. Loved the movie American Quilt except the ending

There should be a list is front of the books that shows the order she wrote them. She says you do not have to read them in order they were written, but I plan to do that also. The one's I have read so far are set in the same location with the same characters with new ones added. If you google Jennifer C she has a web site. She has a list of all her books on it.
