I really like your quilt and it is perfect for a little boy-especially since he helped you pick the fabric. I think some straight line quilting in the form of crosshatching the car panels would be nice and easy to control whether or not you use a walking foot. For the pieced blocks you might consider stitching 1/2 inside and perhaps outside the individual pieces. I would use matching thread for that purpose. If you want to experience FMQ perhaps you could do it in the borders and perhaps use stencils to help you become comfortable with FMQ or working with the feed dogs down. My advice is to not take on too many 'unknowns' at one time. Enjoy the process. Let us know what you do and show us the result.

Echo quilting 1/4" from the red in the red and white squares. Then I would find a car (from a coloring book perhaps) and quilt into the car blocks. One or two cars should fill that block nicely. Where the black corner stones are, I would embroider a stop sign (?). Or various street signs.

I think you did a great job. I like the idea of SITD, straight line and echo quilting that's been already suggested. Just start out with STID and then decide what other quilting would look good to you. You can do it!

I agree with the overall cross hatching....much simpler than stippling or STID....still gives a great quilted look.....Lots of ways to mark the lines, I use washable markers and a long straight edge (after pretesting the markers on all fabrics)
