I started cutting my fabrics into different size pieces for a couple of sampler quilts I thought I would do. Then I realized I was doing all my blocks in multiples of 2 1/2" x ? pieces, so I have now decided to cut all my yardage into 10"x wof. If I have a pieces that is less than 10" I will cut it into 7 1/2" or 5" or 2 1/2" whichever works. I'm planning to work up yardage requirements on a few of my favorite scrappy quilts so I can take x# strips of each color in a hurry to get them done. No more pullling out the various fabrics and measuring and calculating, and going crazy trying to make my scrappy quilts work.

If you feel overwhelmed and pressed to use your fabrics, then it is too much. I have a lot of fabric, mostly small pieces in the FQ range, and frequently find a use for lots of it, for myself or share with other quilters/crafters.

Having managed a patchwork store plus managed the quilting section of a large discount chain, I can honestly say my stash is possibly the largest in the Southern Hemisphere lol.
While many quilty friends envy my stash, I've recently 'gotten real' and admitted, first to myself and then others, that having ssssoooooo much is an utter and absolute pain in the butt!! I vaguely know pretty much everything I have, and we're talking yardage of thousands of fabrics, but I can never find what I want so end up going to buy more.
I remember the old days, when my stash took up just one large wardrobe - I could open the doors wide and select everything I needed at a glance. These days if I go hunting for a 'particular' fabric, I pretty much have to attach a rope and pack a lunch coz I'm gonna be buried for hours!!!

Where are you located? Are you interested in donating some of the fabric? I teach handicap seniors (2) at our 50+ senior center in Florida. There are a couple more seniors that is interested in learning to quilt/sew but I can only supply so much fabric to them. Plus the quilt club I'm in, we make comfort quilts for all ages The last community service project we did was 35 baby comfort quilts for our police cars to give to children on their violent domestic calls. We recently received some Christmas fabrics so we are thinking of making apron-bib for handicapped seniors in a care home. Every year we also make a couple of fund raising quilts to help the senior center, church, etc. Anyway, let me know. If you are in Florida I know shipping is expensive but we would be interested in an donations. Thank you.

I'm in the process of de-junking my house and one of the items on my list is my fabric stash. I've started sorting my projects into shoeboxes (got those free from a local shoe store) and add pattern, fabric, etc all in one box, labelled and shelved. Once I finish going through my stash and boxing all the projects I currently have planned, I'm hoping to have the courage to donate the rest. One thing I would recommend is keeping a few large pieces that would be suitable for either background fabric or backing fabric, since I never seem to have enough for either.

I've stopped buying fabric because I have soooo much. Have also stopped buying embroidery designs as well as most notions. BFF, rebeljane on QB, was buying blades on eBay recently while I was at her place, I said grab me a pack(10 blades) too. Today I opened a drawer in my sewing room and found three packs of five blades. Forgot I had them. Oh well, won't have to buy any for quite some time.
I've been able to buy all this gear because I stopped smoking around five year ago but now it's time to get busier using it. I know that I'll never sew all the fabric I have but I want to give it a good go.I'd get more done if I didn't have to sleep but my body doesn't agree.

This is like: starch vs. no starch and prewash vs. no prewash. I don't starch, don't prewash and don't have a big stash. I guess it all comes down to personal preference, personality, whether we can live with such a big stash, don't mind the $$ investment, have enough space to store it, quilt enough to use it, etc. Or just get pleasure from accumulating fabric. I'm happy with the remnants I collect in the bins at the various fabric stores.
