You don't need any pattern. Just find any block that works great with your fabric. That is what I do. You can check out Craftsywebsite for some free patterns.

I go to Quilters Cache and look at the 6" (or bigger) blocks.

What size(s) are mug rugs? Can you tell I haven't made any yet?

I made these one year. Got the verses from Block Party Studio. A place to set your mug and a treat.

Some people make them coaster size, some make them as big as placemats. If you are participating in an exchange check with them to see the size range they are expecting. Some people make them rectangular to hold a cup and spoon, they are an opportunity to be creative on a small scale

Hundreds of examples and lots of patterns can be found on the web, using google or yahoo. They run from very artsy and complex to cute and quick. However, I would suggest you talk to the person in charge of the exchange to see if there are any rules about size, theme or style. I've seen many that are so pretty I'd consider a mini art project that would never get a splash of coffee! I was first inspired by some I saw on this quilting board!

I just started making mug rugs this year and boy are they fun to make. Let your imagination run wild, almost anything will work. I've done paper piece, hexies and fussy cut. I try to make them about 5 x 7 but a few ended up a little bigger but not much. They really a fun to make.

And luana, I really love the ones you made. So cute!!
