I am making a quilt around a panel and need to know about borders in graduated sizes. I plan to put 3 borders with contrasting 1” sashing in between. Should the borders go from small to large starting from the inside or large to small?

I would probably put the smallest border on the inside. Do you have a picture of the panel?

I agree- smallest closest to the quilt then wider, then widest.

also, you might want to think about mitering the borders. I did a free Jinny Beyer pattern and she had us sew all the borders together and then apply with mitered corners (which wasn't quite as hard as I figured). that way you are only squaring up one "border" instead of 3-4.

I found a wonderful free pattern here with multiple borders. Unfortunately, the credits are not correct. It was designed by Karen Bialik for Timeless Treasures using their Monterrey fabrics. The pattern was available for download from Timeless Treasures while the fabric was in production a year or two ago.

It generally moves from small to large on the borders, but not strictly. The wavy part is all one fabric, but the others are individual borders that vary from 1" to 6.5". It might inspire you to think outside the box.
