I think muslin backing is fine, but what about making the table runner reversible? That would be a great way to not 'waste'. Maybe have a Thanksgiving/Christmas one, and a Spring backing on the red-white-blue one.

Not tacky at all. Who sees the back anyway?

I always back my table runners with great fabrics that way its reversible and you can use it twice during the year. I try to coordinate my binding with the backing so both sides look great. Why do all that work and put muslin on the back so the back side is unusable.
