I agree, the thread per inch is much less on Muslin than on good quality fabric. You worked so hard on the quilt, bind it to last as long as it does.

Muslin is too loosely woven to use as a binding, it just won't hold up.

JoAnn Fabric's has LS (Legacy Studio) Premium bleached muslin (with the other muslins) which I use for fabric painting and to color with Derwent Inktense pencils. It is a great high thread-count muslin. Go for it!!!

My personal preference is for a very soft or almost silky feel fabric for binding. Since the back and top are both flannel I would use flannel for the binding as well.
I also prefer a darker color for the binding, usually a small print that is at least a medium tone that coordinates with the rest of the quilt or is used in the top already.
    What did your client request?

I see no problem using cotton muslin with cotton flannel-------as long as both have been reshrunk.

Muslin comes in several grades, the best is not loosely woven

I would stay consistent and use flannel for the binding too. If you use muslin you will have a much stiffer binding than the soft top and back.
