I'm surprised that no one mentioned a good pair of scissors (not necessarily expensive) that are ONLY used for fabric. Threaten your family if you must, but keep them exclusively for fabric.

    Have fun!

I always use gray thread since it blends in with everything. I rarely use matching thread  :D

    Samantha -

Good advice so far; I'll just add one thing. You will eventually be buying several rulers. The teacher where we are taking our class recommends buying one brand of ruler and sticking with that brand. I think it's great advice, because you will grow accustomed to the markings and "layout" of the ruler. When you move from one ruler to another it is very handy to know what to look for, how to turn the ruler, etc.

I know a lot of people on here use the Omnigrid rulers, and they are great. We are using Creative Grids, and we love them. It will eventually come down to personal preference. Just look at several, and if you can get some pointers from the salesperson ask the pros and cons of the ruler line they are selling.

    Enjoy your new hobby.

Make sure there is plenty of light near your sewing machine.

Also ensure you have extra bobbins pre-wound. Nothing is more irritating than having to stop sewing half-way through strip piecing to wind a bobbin, except maybe sewing a block together to find ONE PIECE is wrong side up and then getting to "un-sew" a whole block.

I always tell someone new to quilting to begin small. A pillow made of a large block, a baby quilt or table runner. It helps get you in the swing of things without doing BIG and getting discouraged. (part of the process, sometimes!)

The alsolute best advice is to cut one block first and sew it up before cutting out your whole quilt!! Other than that listen to all the others on here and go for it! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! :D

I am so excited for you! Keep us posted on your progress.
I too just started but used a bit complicated pattern for my first block.
I'd say just keep a picture of the finished quilt handy and refer to it anytime you are in doubt about the layout. The healing cutting mat and good rotary cutter are great advice along with the other suggestion.
I didn't even know about starching till I read your question, we are always learning! Good luck :)

I always use a gray thread to put my pieces together. You can't see it no matter what color fabric you have.
Welcome and get ready to "store" a lot of fabric........lol

Yes you have started out with some great advice. I wish I had half of this knowledge when I began. Good luck.
