i will not use unwashed fabric. even scraps donated to me get soaked in hot water.

i also want a block to end up being " the expected size". it is easier to assemble a top when the blocks are the same size.

Seam matching, all points accounted for, matched backing, and no UFO's. A final rule, kinda, is I don't make pattern twice. There are too many patterns and designs out there to try and not enough time or life....

It's not repetitive to the point of boring. I want challenges, so rarely do the same pattern twice.

I do try to make everything straight and flat and even but in the end my only rule is that I enjoy making it.

In a few words. For me I try to do the best I can on every quilt I make.

I admire beautifully made quilts where every point is perfect, all the blocks are in the correct place and there are no tucks in the backing.

I make quilts to be taken to the beach, park or playground. I make dog and cat quilts (for the animals) and I am happy when I complete a quilt. Will it lay flat? Probably not, but no one will notice when it is wrapped around a loved one. Are the corners 90 degrees? Nope, but that does not matter when children use it to make a blanket fort. Do cut off points matter when keeping a teen in a shelter warm, or does the love that was put into making it?

If I took the time to create a 'perfect' quilt every time, I would make very few quilts. I would rather share my love and less than perfect quilts who those around me.

Having said the above, when my guild was making charity quilts, there was one top that had an obvious mistake. The guild president (who is a delightful woman) was worried that it was not the guild's Best Work. She asked me to take it apart and fix the mistake. I was happy to do so for her.

For me, neatness counts. Tie off loose threads, try to make points match, etc.

One thing that does bug me is adding wide borders to make a quilt bigger without including that border fabric or at least its colors somewhere else in the quilt.

I like to do my best and I like to keep learning new things. I want my seams to lie flat. Basically I love piecing a quilt and it gives me great satisfaction! Are my quilts perfect? No but they seem to get better as I go along and my family loves them. I do quite a bit of donation quilts to battered women and children and hope the quilts I donate make the recipients feel worthwhile and feel someone cares.

One thing I can't live with in my quilts is cut off points.
I am picky about my own quilts, far more than with anyone else's. But I'm not fanatical either.
As long as it looks good overall I'm happy with it.

Edit to add: I just remembered a quilt I made on my Featherweight. The stitches were loose and I let it go and it still bugs me. It's a wallhanging so you don't really notice it but when I had it quilted I noticed them and it really bothered me!! It's large and hangs over my sofa so you really don't notice it now.

My rule #1 is that I have to like the fabric and also the pattern. Rule #2: I personally don’t like making blocks with many pieces, I tried some and they aren’t for me. I do the best sewing I can but sometimes my points are off, my seams don’t match and they don’t lie flat and it bothers me about ten seconds. I will never (I shouldn’t use that word) make another quilt from someone’s fabric for them. Been there, done that. I truly love quilting but I don’t make quilts for contests or for anyone but me. I end up loving most of my quilts, rarely do I disappoint myself because I stick to Rule #1 and 2.
