I'm from central NY and winters get very bitter here also. Have never used a wool batting because of the expense but hope to do so some day in the future. I have been very pleased with Hobb's Poly Down battings. Toasty to cuddle with while watching t.v. When the weather dips extremely low, I put a set of polar fleece sheets I bought from JC Penney on the bed, a light weight fleece blanket and a quilt with the Poly Down and we are perfectly warm.

It is cold here in Michigan as well and have added several quilts to the bed for warmth. I have never used wool, but I think I will do a quilt with wool to see/feel the difference.

Connecting Threads has sales on batting, including wool every so often. Right now it's 30% off. I stock up on the sales. All the LA in my area faint when I ask for wool batting so I have to furnish my own.

that's what I hear from my family to, years ago before I got into quilting I bought fleece blanket kits already cut and fringe in squares all you had to do was sew the sqrs together so I made all the family those....then a few years later it was the fleece snuggies and last year and this year I gave them quilts and they commented that, altho nice but they thought the fleece items were warmer....oh well!!!!

The quilts with minky or fleece as the backing seem to be the warmest. If really cold, layering with a poly down quilt on top will be nice and cozy without being heavy. If you like heavy, go for denim &/or corduroy.

The warmest quilt I ever made had an army blanket as batting. You can get them at a store which sells army stuff. It has to be in the teens to use it because of the warmth of the quilt. I used medium colors in the top to camouflage (pun intended) the darkness of the blanket.

I love wool, and less quilting is warmer because there's more air to insulate.

I like cotton , but for warmth I up the percentage of poly , or go with wool. Sometimes I double bat using one layer cotton one of poly.

Thanks for all the good advice. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has other options for staying warm. My DH just gave me a really good solution - a trip to Aruba
