My sister's dream quilt
My sister wants this in a quilt http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1294059
She doesn't quilt, I do. Am I this nice a sister? I haven't decided yet if I want to tackle something like this. Assuming I decide to take the plunge, anyone have suggestions?

Do you paint or dye fabric yourself? The color shading in the picture could be easily achieved if you color your own fabric. In fact, I think I would draw this out on a muslin sheet and then use fabric paint, paint sticks, or fabric crayons, etc. and just color the drawing. Then quilt it. You could get an exact copy in whatever size she wants. It looks like fun project to me. Just go for it.

I think Hal is in there! [2001: A Space Odyssey]
If you take it down to Staples, or a similar place, they will enlarge your on screen photo to whatever size you want. I've enlarged pictures by doing it my self, but the $20 or so I spend having them do it saves me days of effort. We may have an unusually sweet group at Staples here, but they always do exactly as I ask. Oh, the last thing that was enlarged for me was 1.5 inches short of the requested 4 feet! I told them it was fine. No one is ever going to know or care about that.

Email Cern and ask them for permission to use the photo for a quilt. Then send the photo with permission to Staples have them print it on big paper and go for it. What a cool idea. They might even have a better pic of the Hadron Collider for you to use, and actual image instead of a color drawing.

I think I would handle different elements in different ways to give it some dimension. Some parts as a "printed" copy or painted muslin (paint or crayon), some parts as layered raw edge applique (like a landscape quilt), and some of the detail parts thread painted.
