I am a fairly new quilter and although I have a few "kits" I have put together with the fabric and pattern, I don't have much stash at all. I take many classes at my Guild and they all say "just pull it from your stash, it won't cost anything". I only have probably what equals to 7 fat qtrs at this point, so I REALLY need to build mine...especially in batiks. I have a stash for garments still, but it's really a pain to have to buy 1/4 yd pieces to make strips for a simple project. Quilters never believe that someone doesn't have a "stash", but you have to start somewhere!!!

I love my stash, not only because I can sew from it an not run to the LQS all the time, but because I can look at it and it is esthetically pleasing to me. It also feels good. If that is not justification, I don't know what is. LOL

Hooray! A good reason to buy more fabric today ... I love my stash too. I am glad you were able to continue with your quilt. When I am working "in the groove" I dont want to stop - for anything! Good for you! Happy quilting.

I spend more time creating my stash, I think, than I do actually creatining FROM my stash!!

When I first started quilting the only "stash" I had was from sewing clothes for myself and my daughter. Then I did a scrappy basket quilt, so I bought small amounts of lots of fabrics to add to the fabric left over from my daughter's quilt. I bought too much (is there really too much fabric?) blue and black through a miscalculation, however, there was enough to make my son a triple Irish chain in blue and black (maybe I was planning that all along) and so the stash grew. Now that we are retired albeit reluctantly, through illness, I am so grateful that when I was working and had the money I would buy fabrics on sale, always buying a little more than needed, except for basics like white, beige, black, etc. as those I would always buy 2 -4 yds. at a time. I hate having to stop a project to go shopping because I didn't have enough of anything to finish the project. Now I am using my "stash" to make quilts, table runners, placemats and my newest "obsession" bags, going to the store only to get fabrics I need to make those projects. I had to purge nearly half of my fabric when we moved to an apt., giving it to my dearest friend, who then took what she wanted and then passed on fabrics to another friend who makes charity quilts for hospitalized children, so it's not going to waste and I know where it went. I did, however, have to draw a line in the sand, telling my husband and son that I was not going to part with any more fabric. They certainly haven't objected to the things I make for their new house, and things for Zoe our DGD. LOL.

I love the ingredient/pantry label for my quilting supplies! I started serious quilt making about 3 years ago and bought a lot of FQs to do a couple of sampler quilts. Every time I did a regular quilt, I bought yardage. I have been on shopping trips with a couple of QBs and found blender fabrics on such a sweet sale that I could not resist. Now I have a rather small but functional stash that I can always go to first when a project comes up.

My stash is so huge it is unbelievable. I made one lap quilt for myself from it and have bought new fabric for all the other quilts I have made. I sill keep buying new fabric that I just love with no quilt in mind to make from it. I am really beginning to believe I have a problem. I love beautiful fabric and when I see something I love I just have to buy it. I think it is time to start digging out fabric and using it. I just bought several bag patterns may be a good place to start. I guess all the women in my family will be getting bags for Christmas.

I would never get a project finished without my stash. Almost always I will need a small piece of something that I can find there. Like you, its a long and expensive trip to the quilt shop
