Default My stash has been justified!

When I started quilting I really didn't understand having a stash of fabric. Over the last couple of years I have accummulated some stash though not really extensive.

This past weekend I ran into a situation that totally justifies having a fabric stash. I was busy cutting out for a new quilt from fabric I had bought some time ago, but had lost interest in the pattern. Well, I'm not sure if my math was a little off when I made my initial calculations or if my change to larger sized blocks resulted in the problem, but I ran out of white fabric while still needing 4 more 4.5" squares. I stewed for a minute think, geeze I don't have time to go to the quilt store for this little bit of white. GRRRRR. Then it occurred to me that I have used the same white (Kona Snow) in a few other quilts and I'll bet I have some in one of my bins. A couple of minutes of looking and sure enough several yards and a few little pieces.

While I would have enjoyed buying more fabric, it was nice to be able to continue with the quilt I was working on with out having to make the long trek to the quilt store, all that time and gas wasted. I now plan to grow my stash when I am on planned shopping trips!

This is one of my main reasons for having a stash, not that I ever planned one, it just sort of grew. But it is nice to be able to work on a project when creativity strikes, or to be able to keep working when you're on a roll, like you did. I rarely finish a project without having to go shopping for something, but I have so much fabric that most of my quilts are now at least 50 to 60% stash with just a few new things added. I think I have finally hit a sort of equilibrium where I'm using fabric at least as fast as I'm buying it. Of course, I could be in denial...

I love my stash. And it IS extensive. I've made so many projects completely from my stash. It's also great to fill in when needed with fabrics I've purchased. I also hate having to stop and go to the store when I"m on a roll so it's really nice to have extra stuff at home that I can just pull out and use.

I am with you on the value of a stash. I consider my stash a quilters pantry... I would not be without. I don't go to the store every time I cook! Maybe we should stop calling it stash and rename it ingredients.

I think that creating a quilt from your stash sometimes makes you think outside the box in order to finish your quilt. And that can be a good thing!

I'm reminded why I have a very healthy stash every winter when I look out the studio window and see snow up to the level of the sill.
