Wow what a treasure you have.....anything antique, vintage absolutely makes my heart sputter. Use it and love it for what it is and most of all enjoy whatever you decide to make with it. After all no matter the age that is what it was intended to do.......be enjoyed and appreciated.

Actually, to be clear, the blog is the quilt historian's blog not mine. She asked my permission to post my e-mails to her and photos.

Anyone know where I can find a general idea of it's current market value?

Maybe you could try an antique valuer who specialises in textiles...maybe a large museum could point you in the right direction.

That being said...unless you are going to display it or keep it as is as some sort of investment...why not put it in a quilt? Sometimes when I look at estate sales or auctions, many beautiful things are sold off after someone has passed away and you can see the items have been locked away and never been enjoyed by the person who owned them.

My Nan would probably be slightly peeved if she could see me use her best china jug for putting flowers in...but everytime I see it "blossoming" away I think of her...maybe she wouldn't mind after all.

Thanks. The historian told me to use the piece best would be to use it as a backing and "tack" it or "tie" it so that it could be removed in the future. But I don't like tacked or tied quilts..so I'd have to machine quilt it and I don't want it ruined. Similarly, I don't plan on collecting enough vintage material and batting to make a "real" vintage quilt.
