If you really don't want it bigger, I agree with those who say "skip the border" and just bind in a contrasting color.

You do want the border to be proportionally correct. I like Jeanne hardly ever put borders on my quilts anymore.

Is is there batting in that wide binding or is it just fab against fab? Or did you fill it before finishing... Just wondering

I usually see the binding onto the quilt and then trim leaving extra batting and backing to fill out the binding

We made the border a bit wider than normal knowing that nearly 1" would be covered by the binding, but the binding is applied just like a regular 2.5" binding. There is top, batting, and backing inside it.

I recently used a 1 inch border, on a quilt where I wanted just a hint of color before the binding.

I've done a 2 1/2" border on a large throw because I wanted the colors contained before I put on the colorful print wide binding. I only had enough fabric to cut 2 1/2" border strips and I likes the color too much to change to another. It worked out very nicely.

So how do you know if the border is proportionally correct? I was told once there was a size ratio between it and your blocks, is that what you mean? And if so what is that correct proportion? After reading through these thoughts I might just do a bit wider binding and call it done. Like the suggestion of 3.5." I'm looking at it now to see how that might look. I'll post a pic when finished.

Nice cross & crown quilt I might add.

Already asked, but I will ask again, do you really need a border?

I agree with the folks who say you may not need a border at all. If you just want a stop or a frame, simply use a wider brightly colored binding.
