Ok, so I figure I need to get the gold sleeve rank insignia. He retired as an E-8 but worked as an E-9 at his last station so I figure I'll need all of the insignia.

Then Pictures of each of the ships he was stationed on. Does anyone know where I might find those on the internet?

Then there are all his medals. How would you incorporate those into the quilt?

The quilting could be the pacific islands, eastern asia and the west coast since those were most of his duty stations. Maybe a "window" for Rhode Island since I know he was there for a short time.

And should I add the campaigns he was involved in? I know he entered service during the Korean Conflict and retired during the Vietnam War.

Then how do I lay it all out? I want something really terrific for him.
There is military.com then add navy ships or the name of the ships, might work. There is also the Navy Memorial in Wash DC that sells pictures of ships etc. Your Dad can list himself there and it will put all the info about his career into it. hope this helps.

Have you thought about Attic Windows?
A big window could be in the center with the Navy Seal,
then each smaller window could have a ship, or location, or pieced service ribbon, or date, etc.

    Just a thought...

Attic Window, I'm a newbie so I could be wrong. That's the one with the sashing around each small panel made to look like a frame right?

That would definitely let me have a high degree of control on placement but it seems to put the emphasis more on the frames than on the panels inside of them. At least that's the way it seems to me. I could be wrong, it may just be the ones that I've seen. I really want it to look like one harmonous unit.

Here is what I have so far.

The black is just the design wall so the white border would be visible.

I'm thinking I would like the red field to be square rather than round. With it round it looks like a clock without all it's numbers.

I talked to dad about it and he is looking for his old records to see if we can find the names of all his ships and all of his ribbons. I think he is excited about the project.

This sounds like a great idea! My son is in the Navy and this will be a good project for me to work on as he moves through his career. Thanks!
