Someone mentioned doing one of these and I knew that I had to drop everything and do one for my dad. He will love it.

Ok, so I figure I need to get the gold sleeve rank insignia. He retired as an E-8 but worked as an E-9 at his last station so I figure I'll need all of the insignia.

Then Pictures of each of the ships he was stationed on. Does anyone know where I might find those on the internet?

Then there are all his medals. How would you incorporate those into the quilt?

The quilting could be the pacific islands, eastern asia and the west coast since those were most of his duty stations. Maybe a "window" for Rhode Island since I know he was there for a short time.

And should I add the campaigns he was involved in? I know he entered service during the Korean Conflict and retired during the Vietnam War.

Then how do I lay it all out? I want something really terrific for him.

Sounds like a wonderful quilt, but I would have no idea where to start. Hopefully someone that has tackled this project will be along to help. Good Luck!

You should be able to find pics of the ships by googling US Naval Ships.
You could probly print them out on fabric.
The medals, if you just make a wall hanging you could use them as embellishments. otherwise no idea

How about, after you make the wall hanging of the medals, take a photo and put it on fabric to incorporate into the quilt?

Are you talking about metal medals or the multicolor ribbons they wore above the pocket? If it is the ribbons, it would be very easy to strip piece them. The metal ones you would need to enlarge a picture of them to get the detail then figure out how to applique/embroider that onto your fabric.

I think I have to figure out size before deciding on ribbons or medals.

And I need the Navy Seal to put on it. Should that be the center?

Should I be doing rows and columns or a circular layout. Or try and get the ships near their home port when he was stationed at them.

Thank you for the help with finding the ships.

Will and army navy store have the rank insignia? and the ribbons if I want to use the real thing?

    Where is my graph paper?

Are you going to use his actual medals or do applique of his medals?

    If you go to http://www.4my3boyz.zoovy.com/produc...l-Kaufman.html

They actually have a couple different Navy Seals that are 11x12 to use. I just got the Army for my son.
