I would sew the binding to the back, bring to front and machine sew it too. This what I now do on all my quilts. Zig zag if you haven't sewn on the binding before. Much sturdier that hand sewing and much faster. The colors and pattern should dazzle so much she may not notice. If I couldn't finish it the right way and wash it too. I would hold off and mail it when it is finished.

This answer is probably too late but why couldn't you attach the binding to the front, then bring it to the back and just baste it in place by hand or machine. Wash and gift then just take it back, take out the basting and sew it properly? Extra work but will allow you to wash before gifting.

My advise concurs with most everyone else-don't wash it before it is finished. I think she will enjoy see the progress and be impressed with how the markers just wash away. Enjoy fellowship with her-time spent with her is special.

I would never wash a quilt until it is bound. But my next thought is to zig zag the edge of quilt then soak the quilt in cold water in the washing machine until washable marker comes out. But don't put it throught the washing cycle then just turn it to spin and remove excess water. Then dry it in the dryer on low (but only if the marker is completely out) and then hang it to finish drying it.
