Default Need advice on fabric/pattern

I am an inexperienced quilter. I have fabric that's been given to me but I don't know what to do with it. I don't even know how to measure the pieces I've been given. I've make a few quilts but always had a pattern and then bought the fabric as directed in the directions. To have the fabric first seems backwards and I can't figure it out. What if I choose a pattern and get almost done just to find out I don't have enough. Since it was given to me I can't just go buy more. Help!

How wide is it ? You need to measure from the selvage (the white strip with the fabric info on it) to the other selvage (if there is one. Typically it’ll be 42-44” wide. Then measure the length. Quilts will have a mix of fabrics so you can add to this fabric. What does it look like? Do you like it?

Is it one fabric or a group of fabrics? Do you like them? You will have to measure them to figure out what is possible. If you post a pic we can probably help.

Your pattern will have the fabric requirements. I would also take it to a fellow quilter or quilt shop and ask them for an opinion if the fabric is suitable for quilts.

simple blocks should be easy to cut and get started with - - right? If you like the fabrics together you could cut 5" or 8" blocks - or whatever size you like and make a scrappy quilt

with this quilt I just cut 2-1/2" squares from some rummage sale fabric and started sewing them together. this is a child size quilt but I have done 2-1/2" squares for bed size quilt as well
