QuiltE, that's how I was going to do it but after cutting 240--1 5/8" little colored squares for the center I had second thoughts. The instructions said to cut for the dark 1 5/8 and cut them diagonally too so very small. I don't well with small pieces so made a diagram for the seminole cutting to find out how long I needed to make the darker sections on either side before trimming them straight. I decided to go ahead and use the little 1 5/8 colored squares I've already cut out so no waste and just add the longer dark blue sections on either side. Time consuming? On yes but I hate waste and I have only a certain amount of the colored fabric left.
Thanks all you gave me suggestions. As always you all always come thru for me. Now on to sewing myself silly with these little 1 5/8" sections.

Too late for this time but generally what I do is have a strip the correct size for the finished block, in your case that was 1-5/8", then I'd cut the blue strips around 3" and sew them to either side of the center unit. You subcut the units into the long skinny rectangles of large dark/center/large dark and then trim the whole piece to size after you are done. That's basically what the diagram QuiltingChris provided.

That is going to be an amazing quilt. I have that panel and have been trying to figure out what to do with it, other than making a wall hanging of it. You are right on with your design.

I had to zoom my screen great big to see it, but cjsews is correct. It is shown as a double 4-patch. It can be made like this: http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/quilt-...ch-quilt-block and then the resulting blocks are sewn into square in squares that are the same size as the larger orange sq-in-sq blocks.

And precision-fantastic results for each of the blocks.
I have a quilt top done that I have been toying with this sort of a border for some time now.
Maybe the same trepidations as you, for either techniques?
Or perhaps, just that I know the boredom in doing so many the same?
