As a wall hanging it is beautiful as it is.
If you want it to be more like a lap quilt, you would need to remove your two borders. Use your white and make borders with the top and bottom wider than the sides. Then add next border making the top and bottom wider than the sides again. That way you increase length a little at a time. Draw it out on paper and you will see what I mean. You would also add an extra between top and bottom borders to fill in. Just make sure to draw it out first and make sure it looks right.

Smaller (12" maybe), scrappy stars with the same color borders would work just fine.

You don't say how big it is but if it's big enough how about a bed throw. I have this w/a quilt that isn't big enough to go down the sides. Then you can chose a bedspread to go under it that would compliment it; even a white one would look great.
