    Thanks for the thoughts! I'm tossing between #2 and #3 now. I like the look of four but it really needs to be done in whole pieces, I think. Breaking up the batik to put it back together doesn't look right to me.
    DottyMo, I did a quick and dirty drawing to help you see how I put the block together. The dark purple is the focus fabric (batik here) the sides are the black and the center pink square is the coordinating print. Cuts are on the dashed lines.
