I agree with everyone, I would just add a wide border and square it up. Knowing the love that went into every stitch, I wouldn't take even one out. Hugs to you on your loss, she must have been a very special lady.

That is a wonderful keepsake. Not sure what size it is, but looks like a nice size lap or larger quilt. If possible I would keep it as original as possible & maybe just put a sm. bias type binding (like 1/2" or 1" folded bias tape) around it as it is. Let it stay "wonky".
Will be anxious to see how you choose to finish it w/pics of this treasure.
Happy quilting

There are a lot of beautiful quilts out there that are very accomplished and just absolutly perfect, blue ribbon, best of show, and made with love, care and hard work. And that is just what your Aunt did, she made a quilt that was made with care, love, determination and yes she is very accomplished. I could never imagine working that hard on a quilt to try to get it done for someone that I loved with those kind of challenges. I would do as little as possible so that you don't lose the integrity of the quilt and present it to your daughter. I am betting the tears will flow and she will cherish the quilt forever.

I think your Aunt's quilt top will be just fine finished as is. Like you say - every stitch was an effort for her, but I'm betting that it was an effort made with love & determination during a rough time in her life. It deserves to be finished, cherished and loved in memory of your Aunt.

However, would it 'bother' your aunt if it was wonky? Was she a 'perfectionist'? If so then I might put a border on it and straighten it 'a bit' but otherwise, leave all the love just the way she made it!

I would definitely leave your aunt's work as is. She did a beautiful job with the hardships she was enduring. Just square it up, put on a couple of borders to tie it all together and give to your daughter as planned. You can feel the love coming from this quilt.

If you look at all the blocks you can tell it is intentionally wonky. I found the answer! In her binder of patterns and notes (that I completely forgot about), it has a drawing of the quilt. No border! She was planning to "wonky stitch in the ditch". I think I will just put on the back do a wavy almost stitch in the ditch. I feel so much better.
Thank you all for your suggestions. Hugs!
