I know they say "not for fabric", but Sharpie pen does NOT wash out of fabric!
There are several brands of "fabric markers" available. I have purchased inexpensive sets at Michaels which worked well on T-shirts, not fading in a summer of washing. (They're in storage right now, so can't share brand.)

Thanks everyone for all the ideas. I decided to go with Sharpie Laundry markers since they are MADE to be washed! Will post a photo sometime when I finish in april. Wish me luck!
