Get the suction cups at Harbor Freight for about $6. They are the same except for the color as those sold at quilt shops for about$30. I have both and use them all the time. I use to have problems cutting long pieces, but not anymore.
Also if you want narrow strips, you may want to get the Simplicity rotary cutter. It works O. K. if you will take the time to adjust it for each type of fabric. Then you have to feed it straight, but it's really fast once it get it figured out.

There are little fabric felt bases/sandpaper? dots you can apply on the corners of your templates or ruler to help hold it in place on your fabric. Much cheaper than the suction cup handle that you apply to your ruler (which works GREAT).

I have a Rule Steady and it's just the best. It's from Australia but I've seen ads for it in both USA and GB quilting magazines. It makes wof cutting easy and more accurate.

Best suggestion I have is Walk your fingers up the ruler, only moving cutter to top of your fingers. You get used to the stop and go quickly. Also use a gripper handle and it works well with longer rulers.

I swear by the O'LIPFA ruler put out by Olfa.........it has a lip on the underside of the ruler that fits on the edge of the cutting mat. Also helps to fold the fabric into quarters so there is a shorter length to cut
