I had hand surgery shortly after starting to quilt back in 1996. I found that adjusting the height of the cutting surface was a big factor in being able to hold the ruler in place. I use my ironing board that I can adjust down & I have a "Big board" on top that makes it just wide enough for the Olfa cutting mat. As others said, folding the WOF so that your cutting 4 layers at 1 time shortens the distance you have to cut & you don't have to move the ruler.

I don't like my ruler "handle". I use sandpaper dots and really like them.

When cutting I have my hand out flat on the ruler with my pinky bracing it on the fabric, it works for me!

I have been told that spraying the back of the ruler with the temp. glue? helped a lot.

I use the large binder clips that can be purchased at any office supply store to help hold my rulers firmly to the end of my cutting table to prevent any slipping. By using my hand pressure on the ruler opposite the binder clip I'm able to cut without the ruler moving. Works for both square and long rectangula rulers. Inexpensive alternative to the quickcut.

I have 2 old irons each with handles that I use to weight the ruler. Then I press on the ruler with one hand between the irons, while using the rotary cutter with the other. This really stabilizes my ruler which has the clear plastic gripe material on the back. You don't have to press hard to keep the ruler stable. The weight of the irons does that for you. You can find these old irons in antique shops.

I bought a 12 inch ruler and it already had cork on the back. It seems to work so far. So, I ordered a small roll of cork material. I am going to glue it to the back of my new metal yard stick. Will let you know how that goes.

Have seen some stick on handles, but unsure if they are worth the investment.
    Thanks
I have the same problem. Try this place they have a variety of grippers that help hold the ruler in place. A lot of our quilt shops sell them and everyone is very happy with them.

Ruler NEVER slides and sooo cheap!

how do you attach the vinyl to the rulers ? i am going to have surgery on both shoulders and have lost almost all the strength to hold a ruler.

This discussion on Plastic rulers that slip is very interesting to me. I bought a new Frosted OLFA (6 x 24 ") and am very pleased. It does not slip, it sort of "hugs" the fabric beneath.
