Default Need Help on quarter square triangles

I know there's probably a simple answer to this question but math is not my strong suit. I'm making a 9 patch set on the diagonal for my DD. I need to resize the pattern and all but the center square are 1/4 sq triangles. To get a 5" finished square what size do I need to cut the squares? I thought 5-1/2" but I'm just not sure. Thanks for your help.
Here's a link to the pattern. It's the one on the far left at the top by The Quilter Magazine. It was a free pattern in the Feb/March 2013 issue. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/98164466850285120

If I'm thinking right, you start with 1 7/8 larger than your finished square. I would go 2inches larger and square the block up

I did a search on Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville site. She says the formula for quarter sq triangles is add 1 1/4 inches to FINSHED size. You cut that square diagonally twice getting 4 triangles. This put the straight of the grain on the long edge of the triangle- taking the bias away from the edges.

Here is the page...you will need to scroll down into this tutorial till you see ****Formula Hint****

    Hope this helps!

You can follow this tutorial. They give you a chart (which you have to download)
with the option of cutting exact (not recommended) or adding an extra 1/4" for
trimming after you make your QST.
