I'm planning on making quilts for the porch rockers but need help with dimensions. These are adult rockers and the quilts will be used on the backs of the chairs.

our senior quilters are making a lap sized quilt that is 50x60. it seems that it might work for you. ours is like a rail fence so wouldn't loose anything in the pattern when folded on the back of the chair

Are they just going to sit on the rocker, not be used to wrap the person up? If so, I would just measure the rocker back, make it about the actual width, but longer than the back so there is some extra (8-10") that folds over the top and helps keep it in place.

I was also wondering if they are for decorative purposes only - like padding for the back of the rocker - or to be used to wrap up in when it gets a bit chilly.

Only decorative. I just want to drape the quilts over the backs of the chairs to add a little color to the porch

I would make them just less than double the width of the back of the chair and about 1-1/2 times the height of the back so you have cushion on the back and enough drape over to hold it in place.

    Sounds pretty!

I think I'd make them at least twice the width of the chair back and twice as long as what hangs down the front -- i.e. same amount hanging over the back as is hanging over the front of the chair. That way, if there is ever any fading, you can just switch which part of the quilt is over the back and which part can be seen from the front.

Making them at least twice as wide will at least make them usable at some point in their lives, even if they have faded too much for the decorative use.

Make them at least 2 times the length, so they go over the back. You may even have to put ties on the sides of them to hold them on. They slip off so easy.

If size is important to you, try other quilts or maybe fabric to see what size looks best.
