Need help with strata star or star spin topper

My Strata Star pattern uses the small triangles from when you cut the large ones --- http://ruthsquilting.com/patterns/
I actually have made this before, but it's been a couple of years. I used Roolen's pattern, but it confused me then & is confusing me now. I went to her website & googled to the English translation, but I want to know how many completed strips do I make? I understand how to cut the large triangles, but how do I cut the small triangles? Are the small triangles on separate strips? Help....
