Need Nine & Half Inch Block
Not sure were to put this question. Friend needs to make a 9 1/2 inch block cutting fabric into small squares, I have tried to figure this out but not good in math I came up with 3- 3 1/2 inch blocks which adds up to 10 1/2 can't seem to figure out how to cut the small sqs. to make it into 9 1/2 sq. block, then she wanted to add the next block also 9 1/2 in. but one piece, now am I making any sense? Told her to join this board she could find all kinds of help and everyone on here would be glad to help her with any questions. The quilts I make comes with the pattern already figure out. So if anyone can help would appreciate it. Tk u.

is the 9.5" measurement the finished or unfinished size? i'm thinking it is the unfinished size since you state that she is cutting a plain block at 9.5". so, 9 - 3.5" cut blocks, when sewn together, will be an unfinished block at 9.5". when both blocks are put into a quilt, they will each finish at 9".

You forgot to include the seam allowance. Three 3.5" blocks DO add up to 10.5", but when you sew them together, each seam eats up half an inch (a quarter inch for each patch). Once they're sewn, the final block (by itself) will measure 9.5". Once it's sewn into the quilt, it will measure 9".
