I have never used Connecting Threads fabric, but can recommend Robert Kaufman's Fusions D# 5573 if you are looking for nice quality black with grey undertones. I purchased this as background fabric for a quilt I am making and it is really lovely! I think the color on the bolt was "Onyx" Good Luck in your search!

I just bought two kits from CT. Love the fabric so much that i ordered another kit.
Another nice thing with their kits-they send you enough fabric in case you make a mistake.
Their customer service is great to.
Iwould have no problem recommending them.

It is NOT quilt shop quality in my opinion. I bought once and was very disappointed at how thin it was compared to LQS. I don't buy from them.
I would bet if you looked at the Hancock catalog, you'd find plenty of just what you want. You will pay more but honestly, don't you want a gift like that to last throughout the marriage? I sure would.
