I like nr. 3 with the blue as the main color but then you need to use only the reds, pinks and very darks as the corners in the 9 patches.
(You have a mistake on the right 9 patch where you used the blue in the corners and the darker colors in the 4 squares.)
IOW, if you use the blue as background, don't use blue or a close color as the corners in the 9 patches. Make sure the contrast is great. The blue one would end up looking like a jewel tones quilt and would be gorgeous.
But maybe they would prefer the black/grey. It is nice and bold and would probably look great.

I agree that it is really not an Irish chain....however the colors in the first are bright and fun....it would be a good idea to run choices by your future DIL ...after 35 years I have found that works the best!
