I have also found that cutting the squares an 1/8 inch larger than suggested and then trimming down the HST units is so much less frustrating.

I don't know what happens when I cut an "exact" square - even when I make scant scant "quarter inch" seams - those HST units end up skimpy.

Actually - I do know what happens - some of the fabric is "lost in the turn" of the seam allowances when they are pressed.

I'm with the rest of the group that upsizes by that extra 1/8" and then trim down after sewing. For me it's a much more accurate practice.

Most rulers have markings between the numbers, especially 1/8th markings. 1/16th is harder to find. There should be 8 markings, the longest on in the middle is 1/2 in. count over 3 marks from the beginning number to make 3/8. Remember in fractions, if you are doing 8ths, it takes 8/8 to make a whole. 3/8 is right before the half way and 5/8 is right after. If yours has 16 marks then you count every two marks to make 1/8th. I hope this helps.

I agree, if you are doing the HST like shown, go up a size, make the block and then cut it to finished size. Making sure the diagnal line is in the center before cutting.

An 1/8th is just in between 1/4 inch marks so 3/8 is in between the 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch mark. Most general rulers have 1/8th inch marks. I have 5 brands and they all have 1/8th inch marks on them. what brand ruler do you use

I'm telling ya, this is why That Patchwork Place Bias 8 Square ruler is perfect for this kind of work!! Their Bias Square rulers have a SOLID very narrow line EVERY 1/8 INCH marked in TWO right angled directions, which enable squaring up the easiest thing ever. I could NOT piece without mine. Ever!

I have to respond to my own post......

I've just spent 40 minutes trying to find my darling Bias Square 8 ruler for sale on the internet and can not find it any where! So I've written to Martingale to ask if they have stopped making it. I pray not, I'll be devastated in my classes where I require this ruler!
I'll be hoarding the two extras I have tucked away!!
