My favorite (which can usually be found on Ebay) is Weaver Fever. She might like one like that; to me it is much easier than a bargello but still has that same feel.

The 2nd picture is of a quilt I made for my daughter and it turned out great. The colors in the photo turned out dull but the colors are really closer to those of the first quilt. It was a challenge but I would say it was hard. If you do it let me know but the pattern does have a mistake and I can tell you where it is. Here is the web site and the pattern is Borealis. The only thing that I did different was I made the edges even not zig zag. I think it looks better. Good luck finding a pattern.

Just this week one of our sister quilters showed a beautiful quilt her own 14 year old daughter had designed and she quilted . Let her design her own.

or maybe a shadowbox which is more modern or a quilt with folded fabric for a more 3 dimensional quilt.

My daughter is the same. She doesn't want anything that looks too "old fashioned". She has admired several quilts that I found by Googling "modern" quilts. They are more contemporary and I'm starting to really like the clean lines and use of a lot of solid fabrics.

Check out the Pie in the Sky pattern list! My grandkids love the quilts I've made using their patterns. Of course, I use bright, wild colors with black accents...

I think when people say they don't like "traditional" or "regular" quilts they are trying to say they don't like scrappy or "patterned" block alignments. I think the labyrinth or one of the Java quilts might be to her liking. Java if she's younger (Under 18) or something like a bargello or labyrinth is she's older (out of high school). I would show her some of the stuff out there and see what she says. There are some with flip flops, denim pockets, appliques. Does she have favorite colors? Does she like circles, squares, sharp lines, curvy lines? Let her be part of the design process. Let her start by looking at the quilts in this topic and the links like Java. Good luck what ever you do. If she helps design it, she'll love it and the memory of sharing the process will be the best.

Perhaps the quilt should center on her life and interests. Photos and other images work well, set irregularly.

You'll find several great patterns here, I've made a couple and they are pretty easy and look beautiful!
