Seems to me that this would help to time stamp when she created this to prove the date. Sort of like mailing something to yourself. The date stamped on the post can't be altered. Not that I know exactly how the legal system would work, just seems logical to me.
Of course, now that you have posted the block for the entire world to see, your odds of success in defending a copyright for the block itself are somewhere between slim and none. If you write a pattern, don't publicize it before you register the copyright. Here's an overview of how to do that.

I have been working at designing a perfect block for a new comfort quilt I am going to make. I came up with this one and am calling it Focus Point. Since I realize there are few new ideas left out there, I just thought I'd ask if any of you know this block under another name by someone else. This is meant to be a scrappy quilt.
