Somewhere I saw one made out of one of those plastic cases that holds blank CD. There is already a spindle in the middle, you would just have to add a wire or rod to hold the thread.

If the thread is cross wound onto the spool, it's meant to come off the end. If it is stacked wound, doesn't cross over itself, it's meant to come off the side of the spool. Most of the time it's not critical if it comes off the side. The only threads I know of that it's critical to use them either horizontal or vertical are metalics and invisibles.

Superior Threads has one that is metal and heavy. Goes for $12. The one from Joanns is a plastic and very flimsy.

I ordered one a few months ago from Jo Ann's website. It holds either 12 or 14 spools, and I really like it!

Referring to the Dritz one for $4 something. I have this one...it is very chintzy and flimsy. I do not recommend it!

I just checked Ebay and they have the thread holders with the cast iron bottoms. I have one and I really like it and use it a lot. Put in a search for thread stand and there are several.
