    Default Newbie needs some help

One of the things I find myself doing wrong is getting way ahead of myself. I've got one lap quilt (a simple block quilt) under my belt and I'd like to make a lap quilt for someone else that will match their decor.

While visiting, like a super spy, I snapped a photo. This is my inspiration.

I keep doubting myself and kind of get a brain freeze as to what I should do. I look at patterns I like then start to realize I'm looking at ones that are intermediate and advanced level. Anyone with ideas? All I have is that the cream/gold/yellow color as the background or border so if they lay it on the couch, it stands out.

I think those colours would suit the Shadow Box pattern or the Illusion pattern from Missouri Star Quilt co.

Do your best to keep to the beginner patterns, you don't want to get ahead of your skills and give up. Of course if you are confident (Or have someone to help you out) try the more complicated quilts that appeal to you. Keep your seem ripper handy and don't despair . Enjoy the process

I think a disappearing 9 patch would be perfect for you.
Make a 9 patch, cut it in half down the middle and across,
swap out the blocks for a new design, and you're done.
or----go to youtube for further directions. this is an easy project.

Would you try and get all of the colors or do you think I could pick out a few?

I'd say you are a pretty good spy! You could try a Yellow Brick Road or a Double Slice Layer cake. The Yellow Brick Road is a pattern you would need to buy, but the Double Slice Layer Cake is free. The Layer Cake starts with 10 inch squares, but you could make your own, and that way you would be able to buy the colors you want. Here is a video on how to make it.

You can buy the pattern about anywhere, but here is one place.

I am going to try to find a picture of quilts I have made of each, in case that helps.

Okay, I think I have them. The Yellow Brick Road is first. Mine is lap sized. The second is the Double Sliced Layer Cake. Mine is twin sized, but it can be made smaller. Maybe one of these will be what you are looking for....

I like them both but I think the double slice layer cake would match a little better.

Do a Google search for "coin quilt" images. You will see patterns that have multicolored columns of color. You could also just do a very basic "patchwork" design, using 5" x5" squares in the colors from the pillow. I know I feel inspired by that pillow. It's a very pleasing mix of colors.

When you say "match" do you mean you want to duplicate the pillow". I thinking you would want it to "go together" rather than match? It would be hard to match everything in the pillow but getting a pattern and fabrics to "go"would be easier and still look good. Let us know what you decide.

"To go" would be a better way to put it. I was thinking the pattern needed to be squares or totally different from squares. I thought obvious rectangle shapes may not work well.
If they like it, I imagine it would be draped over the back of the couch when not in use which would be close to the pillows.
