I am currently trying to make a I spy quilt. I have my top complete and learned how to put border on today watching a video i found online. But how do i put it all together? any help is appreciated

Make sure your backing is larger than your quilt. Iron and starch it very well.

Lay the backing out right side down on the floor or a large table.

Tape or clamp it down tightly.

Smooth the batting over the backing. (The batting should be larger than the quilt top, too.)

Center the quilt top on the batting and backing.

Pin every 3 - 4 inches all over the quilt starting in the center. (I was told a good way to check your pin width is use the width of your fist.)

If you don't want to pin baste, many folks use spray basting or thread basting. Whatever method you choose, be sure to baste it well.

Quilt as desired. A walking foot is very helpful.

I prefer spray basting to create the quilt sandwich -- a lot faster than other methods and easier on my back.

I spread out a large flat sheet first to catch any overspray. Backing fabric is laid down, wrong side up. Backing fabric should be bigger all around than the top. I fold the batting in half or quarters to help center it on the backing, then smooth the batting over the backing fabric. I fold down the top half of the batting over the other half, spray the exposed backing fabric, then smooth the batting back over it. Do the same with the opposite side of the batting. Now the backing and batting are secured together. I do the same with the top, folding into quarters to help center it, smooth it out, fold back the top, spray, etc.

Backing and batting are always cut bigger than the top. How much bigger depends somewhat on the size of the quilt, but at least one inch all around and more commonly 2 inches.

thanks for all the replys. I did find this video about basting. I might look into the spray stuff also. Do you have to do binding around your quilt? I think thats what it's called
