Is it normal to go to quilt retreats alone?
#91
I went to a quilting weekend, when I had only just started quilting. I went to learn. There were 8 people including myself, and all the others were with friends. I was the only one alone. I can assure you, we all helped each other, everyone was so friendly. I now go on cruises alone, and again always find people so willing to talk and be friendly. And there is always quiet places where you can sit and be quiet by yourself, if you want it.
Go ahead, I am sure you will be fine.

I don't think it's weird at all. Go & be friendly & have a great time. We all share the common interest of quilting. Quilters are the most friendly, generous, kind-hearted people I've ever met. Once you share a comment or two you'll find yourself among friends.

I have the same apprehensions which is funny because I am a grandmother, have zillions of kids, some your age and some still at home. I would gravitate towards you if I overheard you talking as you would be a breath of fresh air and a retreat from the above. I would delight in learning from you things I may never have thought of or knew just by listening to you share yourself and work. I think we would find we have a lot more in common outside of walks of life and have lots of laughs and good memories of the retreat.

Go and if you do not like it you can leave! . I am a "weird loner" too and if I waited around on someone to go with me I would never leave the house lol. If I were close to anything like this I would go. To bad I am not in Cali I would be your retreat friend . I always go to shows alone and I do feel like I stick out too, everyone is all chatty around me but guess what , I don't care anymore Because I enjoy it .

Jan, I certainly hope to run across you at a retreat here in VA sometime! I understand exactly where the original poster is coming from and have felt totally left out sometimes, and sometimes I find wonderful folks who encourage me to relax and stop being a wall flower! All depends on the individuals who make up the group I suppose.

What's normal? LOL I just went to my first retreat in November and the only person I knew was the quilt shop owner, but it didn't take long to meet others plus there was two of us at one table so right away I met someone. I had a ball and will never let going along stop me. And by the way I too am not a real out going person.

LOL! I can just picture a group of "older" quilters when a young newbie quilter shows up. You'll probably be mobbed with the experienced quilters anxious to share their enthusiasm and knowledge. There may be a few not-so-eager-beavers, but overall, I think you'll have a great experience.

Go and enjoy. Quilters are a pretty friendly bunch. I went alone and had a big project I wanted to get done so I wasn't too worried since I knew I'd be very busy but everyone talks to everyone and once you cruise around to see what all the projects are you will have made some friends!

I went to my first quilting event by myself. Like you I was a little concerned, but I had a wonderful time. Everyone was very friendly and included me. I would not hesitate to go by myself again.
