OMG, you're doing a GREAT job!! Please don't be so hard on yourself. And remember, when making an art quilt, so much of it doesn't show thru until you do the stitching and embellishing! I love what you've done so far. Keep up the good work.

I paint mountains. I would add another row of darker mountains in back ground or add a section of another mountain in front of the mountain. Work from the top of the mountain and make a smaller section, then add a third layer, bringing it to the grass area. But, you should start with the darker in background and come forward with the lighter.

First let me say that you are doing amazingly well -- much better than I could. I have always wanted to try an art quilt but have been afraid to. Congratulations for getting the courage and taking the first step. You said that you were not happy with the results so far and unless it was your intention to do so, you may not be happy with it because the color you chose for the large hill behind the house and the color of the sky changed the depth of the picture. If you look at the picture you will see that the hill is darker than the sky and it is reversed on the quilt. That being said, once you add in the fence, it may make all the difference in the world as to how you feel about it. And, don't forget that when you do your quilting and embellishing, a lot will change on the quilt. It is going to be great and I think that you should be very proud of your efforts thus far -your work is far better than I could do. Keep it up and don't forget to post when you are finished.

I think you can do a lot with thread to tone down some areas. The fence could be done in thread or with couching. Do some quilting around your objects and I think maybe that will blend things more. Had you used light, medium, darks for some of the items, thread could have made the textures. The way you have done it, do the opposite to define some of the areas. Just observations - I'm impressed with your attempt.

My mom is an artist - if this makes sense to you, what she would tell you is that you want to give the "impression" of the picture or the suggestion of the object rather than being too literal.

It's really pretty, but I think I would have gone with a darker color for the stones of the church. As light as they are, they tend to blend in with the mountains and snow.
Of course, don't take my word for it cause I've never in my life even attempted anything like that.

Catrancher: what is it that you are not pleased with? Have you stood back 20' and looked at it. Sometimes that helps me to put it up on a wall and walk by it for a week or two... being too close to something can cloud your perspective.

It looks great to me. I love the fabric you did the grass with. :-D

I think you are doing an amazing job and just need to start playing more with shadows to create some depth. You've done a wonderful job with the fabrics, now put your threads to work. Have fun and play - that is what it's all about, right???

I really LOVE the fabric you are using for the mountain behind the house--perfect. However, the house seems to be floating on top of its little hill--what about a low range of slightly darker foot hills between the blue mountain and the top of the hill? Just a thought--you are doing great!!!
